The discovery of a skeleton with iron shanckles at Populonia.

In the early days of November 2016, during the excavations carried out in the heart of the Gulf of Baratti, the tomb of a man who had been buried with chains on his ankles was discovered. The grave was very simple: a pit containing the remains of an exceptionally well-preserved man, with two big and heavy iron rings still attached to his ankles, shackles applied while he was still alive to prevent escape and limit movement. This system of constraint was completed by the fragment of an iron yoke, found in the filling earth near the base of the skull, which in all likelihood had been around the dead man’s neck.

"The man in chain from the dunes of Baratti" exhibits this discovery.
