In September, Epic announced that the Fab Publishing Portal opened for Unreal Engine Marketplace sellers and now we’re excited to announce that the Fab Publishing Portal is open for the Sketchfab community. Starting today, you can migrate your free and for-purchase licensable models to the Publishing Portal so you’re ready when Fab launches later this month.
Here’s what you need to know about what’s changing for the Sketchfab Store, how to migrate your content to Fab, and how we’re continuing to support Sketchfab’s core features:
Sketchfab Store content
When Fab launches, it will replace the Sketchfab Store and you will no longer be able to buy or sell assets on Sketchfab. Models that creators have migrated to Fab will remain viewable on Sketchfab and display a link to Fab where potential buyers can purchase the content. Store models that have not been migrated to Fab will continue to be viewable on Sketchfab but will not be available for purchase or download (except by users who purchased previously). For migrated assets, overall star ratings will be ported to Fab, but all ratings and reviews on Sketchfab will be removed when the Sketchfab Store closes.
If you are interested in selling your 3D models, we invite you to sign up to become a publisher on Fab. For more on migrating eligible models to Fab, see the “How do I migrate my models to Fab?” section below. From Fab’s launch until the end of 2024, Fab publishers will earn 100% revenue share on sales of Fab Standard-licensed products.
If you have purchased content from the Sketchfab Store in the past, you will continue to have access to it through the Purchases tab of your Sketchfab profile page.
Free content
Free content will continue to be available on Sketchfab into 2025. Before we remove free licensing from Sketchfab next year, Fab will release a streamlined sign-up process for users who wish to only offer free content for download. When that process is in place, we will invite the Sketchfab community to transfer their eligible Creative Commons-licensed models to Fab.
Models that are currently licensable under CC0, CC BY-ShareAlike, CC BY-NonCommercial, or CC BY-NoDerivatives cannot migrate to Fab under those license types, as those licenses do not exist on Fab at this time. We will update our community in the event that Fab changes its licensing options to allow for a wider range of CC licenses. As with all other free content on Sketchfab, these models will remain available for download until licensing becomes completely unavailable on Sketchfab. The models will continue to be viewable but will no longer be available for download on Sketchfab when licensing becomes unavailable.
How do I migrate my models to Fab?
If you wish to migrate your eligible licensable content to Fab, sign up to become a Fab publisher.
After Fab sign-up is complete, log in to Sketchfab and link your Sketchfab account to the same Epic Games account that you used to sign up for Fab.
Then, navigate to the Fab migration tool, which will automatically copy to Fab those models that are:
- Public, published models, and
- Licensable under Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) or Standard Licenses, and
- One of the following file formats: FBX, OBJ (+MTL), glTF, GLB, USDZ, BLEND
On Fab, you will have access to an improved 3D viewer and editor, media galleries, expanded payout options, and the ability to set prices for Personal and Professional pricing tiers. While all product star ratings will migrate over from Sketchfab, Fab will not support open-text reviews or model comments. For full details, please take a look at our migration documentation.
Sketchfab’s Community and Core Features
While Sketchfab’s licensable content will move to Fab over the coming months, Sketchfab.com will remain dedicated to its services that enable creators to upload 3D models and share them publicly or privately via the web.
Sketchfab’s community and core features remain unchanged and we will continue to support Sketchfab’s business solutions. Our goal is to improve these capabilities and bring more of them over to Fab starting in 2025, making Fab not just a marketplace but a powerful service for 3D content creators and businesses.
Sketchfab’s 3D Viewer and APIs will continue to function as they do today. Partners who use these tools to create configurators or 3D experiences can expect those tools to continue working for the foreseeable future. Integrations relying on Sketchfab’s Download API will continue to have access to free content until Fab has an equivalent public API available.
We will keep you informed in advance about any changes that may affect your account.
