Important Changes to Our URL Structure

Back to overview

In our ongoing effort to help audiences quickly and easily find 3D models online, we have made a couple of small but significant changes to the URL structure of our model pages this week.

The new URL format is more friendly to search engines and helps sites like Google more readily index your work. This change is particularly beneficial to sellers in our store looking to drive search traffic from outside sketchfab.com to their work for sale.

The previous format was (to use industry parlance) not human readable. For example:

https://sketchfab.com/models/8fcd573231b644ee9c28cba212235847

The URL now includes the model name in the URL and specifies “3d-models”,  e.g:

https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/a-link-to-the-future-8fcd573231b644ee9c28cba212235847

Note, we will continue to support the original link structure (via a redirect), so if you are linking to models on Sketchfab either using the old full URL or the shortlink version you can generate with our “Share” feature, so we are not anticipating this change causing any problems for existing links. The URL used to embed models in an iframe also has not changed, so this will not break any existing embeds around the Internet.

That said, in rare cases, if you do encounter a bad link, please get in touch with our support team and we will be sure to resolve the matter quickly.
