Sketchfab Overviews: Tipatat

Back to overview

In Sketchfab Overviews, our users tell us how Sketchfab has influenced their workflow, development process, and helped their art and/or business as a whole, cohesive effort.

Hi, I’m Tipatat Chennavasin, co-founder and General Partner of the Venture Reality Fund, where we invest in early stage VR and AR startups. I no longer make 3D art professionally, but still do so as a hobby. One of the things that excites me the most about VR is that it has the power to democratize 3D design and communication like the desktop PC did for 2D.

I’ve always loved to draw, but somewhere along the way, that joy was slowly lost. But now with VR, using gestures controls and programs like Google’s Tilt Brush and Oculus Medium (which I have posted some work on my Twitter) creating 3D art feels magical and wonderful again.

There is something especially interesting about Tilt Brush where it let’s you create in 3D space but with the natural ease of 2D drawing. I often think about how to take advantage of VR as a new medium and try to come up with art that is unique to VR. I also like to try out new ideas and concepts that work best in VR like my Donald Drumpf piece where you can move into his head to see what’s really inside.

Or my latest sketch which is a perspective illusion that is a recreation of the Willy Wonka candy forest but that comes together to create a portrait of Willy Wonka when viewed from the right POV.

Sketchfab is a great way to share my 3D work, especially now that you can view it in VR. Something gets lost with 3D art when it is flattened into a 2D screen. It’s also a great place to share work in the hopes that it gets remixed or reused in other’s work to contribute to the 3D art culture in general. That’s why I’ve been sharing some of the 3D scans I did of celebrity wax sculptures to see what others decide to do with it.
