A black mulberry stands in Beckenham Place Park, it is believed to be 200 years old and still fruits, it’s thought to be the last surviving tree of a small orchard which once stood on the edge of the grounds. The berries look whitish when they first form, and then turn red and finally dark purple or black when they ripen and they resemble elongated blackberries. Black mulberry was imported to Britain from southern Europe in the 17th century in the false hope that it would be useful in the cultivation of silk worms, however they were much used in folk medicine, especially in the treatment of ringworm.
