20th century Abelam peoples food storage pot

Used in initiation “kaiatagawa” (frog). All the jars are tied together and named then “frog eggs”. They are only shown to initiates. In the Abelam’s tradition women are not allowed to make this type of bowls, only men.

Location : Southern region of Wosera, Prince Alexander Mountains, Eastern Sepik province, Papua New Guinea, Melanesia.

Ceramic and pigments. Pottery made with columbine and decorated before firing.
