자기 나침의는 지구의 자기장을 이용한 전통적인 자석식 나침반을 말합니다. 이는 오랜 항해의 역사와 함께 긴 역사를 가지고 있습니다.

지구의 남북 방향의 자기장을 이용하여, 회전체에 막대자석을 올려 두어 남쪽과 북쪽을 알아내는 전통적 장치입니다.

다만, 선체의 진동, 전류에 의한 자기장의 변형 등으로 오차가 발생하는 단점이 있어, 현재는 회전나침의를 사용하고 있습니다.
