Once, Buddha was walking through a village when he encountered a man who was angry and abusive towards him. Buddha listened patiently to the man’s insults and then asked him a question: “If someone offers you a gift and you refuse to accept it, to whom does the gift belong?” The man replied that it would belong to the person who offered it. Buddha smiled and said, “That is correct. So if I refuse to accept your abuse, does it not then still belong to you?” The man was taken aback by Buddha’s wisdom and immediately apologized. 359-ST-Buddha 41
