The Arhat Hall of Hoon-ji Temple was built in 1735 and renovated in 1851. In the center is a large statue of the great Buddha, Roshanabutsu, along with two statues of Zenzai Doji and an eight-year-old dragon girl, and on either side of Rohshanabutsu are statues of Shakyamuni’s ten great disciples and 16 Arhats. On the surrounding platform are statues of the 500 Arhats. It was built in Kyoto during the Kyoho year in imitation of the statue of Mt. Tendai in China, and was transported here to Hoon-ji Temple. The statue was created by Tange Komano and nine other Buddhist sculptors (according to the Hoon-ji Temple pamphlet).
