More model informationWorld War Two A replica of a heater made by a POW whilst in a prison camp, made out of food tins given by the British Red Cross.
Whilst the Geneva Conventions stipulated protections for POWs and those engaged in war, as represented by the Red Cross food parcels this heater is made out of. There was very little provision for the protection of civilians during WW2.In spite of this, the ICRC did provide assistance to civilian internees, but was repeatedly refused access to people held in concentration camps.
As a result of WW2, the three existing Geneva Conventions were revised in 1949 and updated, and a new Convention drawn up to give protection to civilians.
