Photogrammetry of a grave that was situated on a Viking period grave field.* The grave probably dates to the early 11th century. The larger stone-circle fenced a burial for an adult person. The small stone-circle was secondarily inserted. It contained a child burial.
The deceased were buried in coffins, orientated east-west. This stands in opposition to the heathen tradition with cremation burials, thus signaling a Christian belief. On the grave field, which contained c. 30 Viking period graves, both types of burials existed. The buried were probably among the first Christians in this region, and buried in a time when no fixed churchyards yet existed.
We can assume that they were closely related, perhaps a parent and his/her child.
The grave field has been fully excavated. For more information (in Swedish), see: https://www.facebook.com/uppdragarkeologi/ *Oppeby, Nyköping RAÄ 1:1. Link to the Swedish National heritage boards site Fornsök (in Swedish): http://kulturarvsdata.se/raa/fmi/html/10035700010001
