Aghaboe Abbey Chapel Piscina (LA022-019001-)3D Model
A monastery was founded at Aghaboe (Achadh Bhó / Field of the cows), Co. Laois in the sixth century by St Cainnech (Canice/Kenny). In 1382 a Dominican friary, was founded here by Florence MacGillapatrick, Lord of Ossory. In the medieval period the townland of Aghaboe stood in the barony Upper Ossory which was divided into three cantreds called Clarmallagh (Clár Maí Locha/ plain of the lake), Clandonagh (Clann Donncha/the family of Donncha) and Upperwood. This piscina or sacrarium is located in the eastern wall of the southern side chapel on the west end of the friary. Piscina comes from the Latin piscine meaning fish-pond, or reservoir and is used to a describe a stone bowl with a drain-hole, located in the south wall near the altar of a church for the disposing of water used in the Mass. Three lobes remain possibly of a six-lobed hole contained within a decorative niche known as the Fenesetlla.
