In the 1920s, the original Alexandra Building stood as a magnificent red-brick landmark in the heart of Hong Kong’s Central district. Opened in 1904, its distinctive Neoclassical design featured stone dressings and prominent domed cupolas on its corners, making it one of the most handsome buildings of its time. Located on the prestigious corner of Des Voeux Road and Chater Road, it formed a powerful architectural trio with the neighbouring Prince’s and Queen’s Buildings. The ground-floor arcades housed exclusive shops, while the upper floors were home to leading firms, making it a bustling hub of colonial commerce. This elegant structure was demolished in the early 1950s to be replaced by a modern successor.
