More model informationAlice Brown, the first woman to land at Albert J. Ellis Airport in 1971, took her first solo flight on August 31, 1970. One of the traditions associated with a pilot’s first solo is the cutting of their shirt tail. This shirt tail and the photograph of Alice just after her solo flight help tell the story of air travel in Onslow County in the museum’s special exhibit You Are Here: A History of Travel and Transportation in Onslow County. Along side these personal artifacts is Brown’s patch from the Petticoat Pilots, an all female pilots organization to which she blonged.
To see these artifacts and others associated with travel and transportation in Onslow County visit our special exhibit You Are Here, open through May 2017.
