Struck by the death of her little son Macer, Caelia Macrina decided to found an institution that could accommodate 200 young orphans. He gave one million sestertii for the foundation and ordered the construction of a building to welcome young people in Terracina. The institute has permanently hosted 100 boys up to 16 years of age and 100 girls up to 14 years of age. Food subsidies at the time were either private or government. Generally the subsidy was higher for boys than for girls, the latter being married younger 4 . Caelia Macrina followed this pattern.
