The human lungs are essentially a sponge of cellular material that expands and contracts in an action we call breathing. Inhalation brings fresh oxygen into the alveolar sacs seen here and facilitates oxygen transfer into the blood vessels surrounding the sacs. At the same time, carbon dioxide is released from the blood vessels into the alveolar sacs and exits on exhalation.
