Between 2008 and 2019, a British Museum research project undertook research excavations at the site of Amara West in northern Sudan, in collaboration with the National Corporation of Antiquities & Museums. The town was founded by the pharaonic state around 1300BC, to administer the colonised region of Kush (Upper Nubia). For further details on the project, visit Amara West ResearchSpace.
This model presents the latest phases of excavation (mostly phase 3A, 3B and 4), roughly equivalent to 1200-1000BC. Key rooms are labelled to assist orientation and navigation.
The model was built from digital photographs, including kite photography, which was then processed through Agisoft Photoscan, Maya Scene and into Unity. This web-optimised version is of lower resolution than the full Unity version used by the research team. The model was first created by Susie Green, and further refined and extended by David Fletcher.
