The logistics and transportation industry are vital to our global economy. In the United States in 2015, $1.48 trillion dollars—8% of the nation’s GDP numbers—was spent on shipping alone. The shipping market blossomed in the early 1900s when people wanted department store goods delivered directly to their homes. Today, UPS stands as the leading logistics company. Upon its creation in 1916, UPS would record its deliveries on paper. When portable computers and wireless networks were invented in the early 1990s, UPS began using the DIAD 1. Roughly every five years, UPS releases a new and improved DIAD. Unfortunately, the DIAD 5 released in 2011 uses most of the same technology and software as the original DIAD. Such outdated models may jeopardize UPS’s superpower status. In other words, it is important for the technology of the DIAD to match today’s increasing demand for shipping due to the explosion of online shopping.
