I have been expanding on and building my 3D weapons portfolio, and what better place to start than the AR-15 platform. Part of my journey while modeling these weapons is first researching how these weapons work inside and out, in order so that the 3D model will better represent what it is referenced in real life. For me the magic of making 3D weapons is UV’s and Texturing, where laying out UV’s correctly is crucial so that the texture work follows the flow on the mesh correctly. Texture wise I made an effort to represent the wear and tear over time of use, the marking and grime of the bolt repeating its action for every shot fired, the dust and wear that would collect near the brass ejection port over time, etc.
Let me know what you guys think about my work down in the comments below!
