The 97 ft Canadian schooner Ariadne was built in Port Burwell on Lake Erie in 1867. The ship with a crew of six was caught in a terrible December snow storm on Lake Ontario while trying to make Oswego with a load of grain. The wind and waves were too strong to enter the harbor so they blew past it, as the rigging began to break apart and they grounded in Mexico Bay. They spent a freezing day on the boat as it slowly pounded to pieces then in the rigging before a shore crew could rescue the only three crew members that survivied. Three perished including the young 28 year old captain and his father the first mate. The amazing story is recounted in the history link. The model of what now remains exposed above the sand was created from 1,352 12 megapixel GoPro images shot and processed by Benjamin Ioset.
