More model information

This small stone is located in the same grouse butt east of the Pickett’s Beck area, on Askwith Moor, North Yorkshire as IAG523, but at the southern base of the butt. It was initially identified during surveys conducted for Historic England / English Heritage’s Monuments Protection Programme in the mid-1990s and later referenced in Boughey & Vickerman’s ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’ (2003) as IAG524, described as:

‘Small rock. Two large shallow cups in N-facing side’

Similar to IAG523, the depressions show fracturing around the edge and possess characteristics consistent with bullet impacts rather than prehistoric cup marks. Although first noted by Historic England, the stone has not been scheduled, which may suggest that surveyors weren’t confident about prehistoric creation.

This model was created using 12 images captured with a Pixel 7 phone by Richard Stroud in February 2025 under less-than-ideal lighting conditions.
