Kyiv, Ukraine
The Assumption Cathedral is the main cathedral church of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a unique architectural monument and the tomb of many prominent people.
The foundation of the cathedral was laid in 1073 on the initiative of St Theodosius of the Caves and at the expense of Prince Sviatoslav Yaroslavovych. After its construction, the church suffered from various destructions and defeats. In 1718, it was destroyed in a severe fire. The church was rebuilt in the Ukrainian Baroque style in 1729. It remained in this form until 1941. On 3 November 1941, the Assumption Cathedral was blown up and turned into ruins.
However, the cathedral was a symbol of ancient Ukrainian culture, spiritual heritage and national identity, so it was restored from the ruins in 1998-2000 in the form in which it existed from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
The scanning was funded by the Aliph Foundation.
