More model informationThe remains of the ancient religious capital of Assyria, the city Assur lie on the western bank of the Tigris River in what is now Iraq. The site of the city was occupied since the Bronze Age during the Sumerian period, before Assyria emerged. Between the ninth and seventh centuries B.C., it was the most powerful empire the Near East had ever seen, encompassing Mesopotamia, Anatolia and parts of Egypt and the Levant. Assur was captured and sacked by Ardashir I of the Sasanian Empire c. 240 AD, whereafter the city was largely destroyed and much of its population was dispersed. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site at high risk in 2003.
