This carved head was discovered in a section of the town wall in Athlone. The head was found on top of section of wall which was likely a secondary location. The date of the head could be from medieval period, although a post medieval date should not be ruled out. The base of the block is dressed and shaped under the chin which suggests it rested on a supporting stone, and was not designed to overhang the wall. The head displays simple smooth facial features, with decorated wavy hair. Several re-used sculptured stones have been discovered in Athlone including a Sheela-na-Gig
