More model informationA wooden coin chest from the 1622 galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha. Evidence for 52 chests has been documented at the Atocha shipwreck site, much of it in the form of wooden remains that survived nearly four centuries buried in the sand under the sea. The plain crates were made of rosewood (Dalbergia sp.) and were secured simply by being nailed shut. Each crate carried an average of 1,982 eight-reales coins weighing 60.625 kg (133 lbs. 6 oz).
