More model informationRoman statuette of a bound barbarian forced into a squatting position by the nature of the bondage. Numerous statuettes of bound barbarians have been found, especially in the Limes area along the Danube. Many have vertical and horizontal holes that have led to the interpretation as jewelry of horse bridles or snaffle gags. Bronze; h 4 cm; 2nd half of 2nd century A.D.
The Romans, who were initially considered barbarians themselves by the Greeks, adopted the term for all people without Greco-Roman education.
