Rock found north of Eel Hill, on Barningham Moor, County Durham.
This rectangular rock was first identified during NADRAP surveys in 2006. It’s found near a spring head, just north of Eel Hill. A number of depressions can be seen on the sloping surface. Whilst some are natural solution, two of the depressions appear typically ‘cup-like’ in profile and may be artificial. Referenced ‘Barningham Moor 124’ by NADRAP the record was added to ERA in 2008. In summarising the depressions the team recorded:
“Although these features are cup-like, it is difficult to determine whether they’ve been created artificially or by weathering of cement weakness. A number of small solution-holes on the rock could possibly suggest the latter.”
