This angular rock was first discovered by Paul Brown during his surveys on Barningham Moor, County Durham in 2006.
It’s located on the northern slopes of Eel Hill, just west of Osmaril (Osmonds) Gill. Referenced BAR32a in Paul & Brown’s 2008 publication ‘Prehistoric Rock Art in the Northern Dales’, the rock was recorded ‘Barningham Moor 125’ by NADRAP and added to ERA in 2008. The motifs consist of linear connecting grooves, 2 cup marks and a possible ring. Tooling marks are evident in some of the grooves and may have been created with a metal implement. Could the markings be possibly later than prehistoric??
