Stone found towards the summit of Eel Hill, Barningham Moor, County Durham.
This is an unusual carving in many ways; its position close to the summit of Eel Hill, the large bowl and a motif carved in relief. Other designs include cups, cups with rings and a linear groove. Whether they’re all contemporary isn’t known, but the carving created in relief does seem to have different form to the other motifs. Does the groove bisecting the northern part of the rock delineate old carvings from new? All guesswork of course! The stone was first noted by Tim Laurie and included in his 1998 publication with Stan Beckensall, ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of County Durham, Swaledale and Wensleydale’ as ref 69. NADRAP added it to ERA in 2008 as ‘Barningham Moor 57’.
