History The barrel had already been used for the storage and transport of wine by the peoples of Mesopotamia many centuries before Christ, according to reports by the Greek historian and geographer Herodotus (484-425 BC). The Romans began to use wooden barrels under the influence of the Celts. In the second century of the Christian era, barrels were used to store wine, oil and water. The use of barrels to store and transport cachaça was adopted from the beginning of its production, in the beginning of the 17th century, until the 1930s, when, by law, its sale was allowed in containers of a maximum of one liter.
