More model informationThe Battle of Paardeberg (Feb 18-27, 1900) during the Second Boer War occurred in the Orange Free State. British forces led by Field Marshal Lord Roberts trapped the Boer forces under General Piet Cronjé near the Modder River. A disastrous frontal assault led by Major General Kitchener resulted in heavy British losses. Instead of exploiting this, Cronjé dug in, allowing Roberts to resume encircling the Boers and launching an extended artillery bombardment. After ten days of continuous shelling and limited resources, Cronjé’s forces surrendered on February 27. This marked the first significant British victory of the war, shifting momentum in their favor and signaling the beginning of the end for the Boer republics.
