Rediscovered by Bath Preservation Trust in 2021 and recently excavated, this Grotto Tunnel forms part of the historic pleasure gardens known as “Beckford’s Ride”, associated with Beckford’s Tower to the West. The Tower is Grade I listed and a key landmark, visible from many locations across the Bath World Heritage Site. It was completed in 1827 for the private use of William Beckford, a wealthy novelist and art collector, and now houses a museum.
Grottos were very fashionable in Georgian gardens. Although it appears roughly hewn the curving rock face leading to the tunnel entrance was intentionally cut and shaped so as to appear naturalistic, and the winding descent was carefully designed to create a sense of mystery.
A programme of conservation and repairs now aim to reconnect the Tower to its surrounding cultural landscape, and the Tunnel will be made accessible for the first time in over 100 years to museum visitors.
