This is a lead beggar’s badge from Arbroath Abbey dating to 1773.

An act of Scottish Parliament in 1424 made begging illegal, except by those wearing an official badge. It was hoped that this would help decrease the amount of beggars. The size and shape of the badges were decided by the parish authorities, and many of the designs included town and county coats of arms.
