The Benie Hoose is the site of an impressive Neolithic house. Excavated by CST Calder in 1954-5. In order to create a level platform to construct the house (or maybe it was extended?) the hillside was cut into. A long period of occupation was indicated by the many finds from the excavation - 1800 hammerstones, pounders, stone discs and other types of large tools, including many querns.
This house is specifically known as ‘Benie Hoose’ but there is another much larger neolithic house close by known as the ‘The Standing Stones of Yoxie’ along with a chambered cairn and cist on the hill overlooking the site.
