More model informationHand sample of Berlins Porphyry from the Denneston Plateau, to the east of Westport on the West coast of New Zealand (South Island). Note the unique texture of this rock compared to the other igneous and metamorphic rocks that form the basement of the area. Notable is the presence of large lithic fragments that are compositionally very different from the groundmass of the rock. Although difficult to see this difference in hand specimen without a handlense, these differences become very obvious in thin-section.
The two flat sides have been cut for thin sections.
