In Old Norse literature, berserkers were those who fought as if in a trance, a trait that later gave rise to the modern English word berserk (angry, violent or out of control), and it was also thought that this behavior was triggered or enhanced by the use of psychoactive drugs, with henbane and/or alcohol being the most likely candidates.
