Large boulder measuring approx 3m x 2m set in private woodland, near Cottingley in Bradford.
This is the largest and most elaborate of the four carved rocks found within the Black Hills Scout Camp. First recorded in 1976 it was one of five scheduled by English Heritage in 1999: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1018817 However, it is likely that only four exist. The design is quite unique, encompassing cups, grooves and rings within larger enclosed rings. Further cups, rings and linear grooves are found outside. There is suggestion of superimposition in places, particularly from linear grooves.
The carving wasn’t included in Boughey & Vickerman’s 2003 publication ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’, but was later added as ref IAG4a.
The carving was outside the area covered by CSI and therefore doesn’t have an ERA record.
Model created from 79 photos captured during research for an English Heritage publication on SfM technologies in April 2009.
