The Neo-Assyrian Empire was the largest and last period of the Assyrian Empire which reigned for nearly 1,300 years from 1900 to 609 BCE. Beginning in the 18th century, England led many archaeological excavations and studies throughout Iraq contributing to the vast objects held at the British Museum.

Dated to the early beginnings of the Neo-Assyrian period, 825 BCE, this black limestone obelisk was a public monument celebrating the king’s achievements.
