Detail of the blemmye corbel on the north side of Romsey Abbey, Hampshire. The Travels of Sir John Mandeville (c. late 14th century) describes them as “ugly folk without heads, who have eyes in each shoulder” with mouths “round like a horseshoe, in the middle of their chest”.
