More model informationGrotesque head on the archway of the main entrance to St Brandon’s Church, Brancepeth, County Durham (Northern England). Said to be the legendary Brawn of Brancepeth – a fearsome wild boar which roamed the County Durham countryside between the rivers Wear and Gaunless. It was slayed by the medieval knight Sir Roger de Ferie in 1208. However, the name ‘Brancepeth’ more likely is derived from ‘Brandon’s Path’, the path to St Brandon’s shrine, which is now the present day parish church building near Brancepeth Castle.
