An authentic, American-made Legitimus Collins & Co. machete, broken beyond repair.
This example is quite valuable to my research, since a portion of the blade’s interior layering is visible without having to damage a cleaner model in order to explore its metallurgic properties.
Original shape is yet unknown, although it is quite probable that it is not like the other example I published. Due to its length, curvature and weight, I believe this is closer to the standard “corvo” semi-straight 16-22 inch machete shape. Steel quality is extremely high, this tool saw much use in its time and apparently reached the limit of its durability.
Exact date unknown, though the stamp suggests a similar time period (1960s) as the other example I published.
The blade shows significant modification, such as a makeshift reverse edge, and a further machine-polished edge at the base of the handle. It is completely straight, though lacking the usual fluting that is so characteristic of this brand.
