Bronze Age cremation urn (SOTLS : A1965.145)3D ModelNoAI
This Bronze Age cremation urn was excavated by Peggy Guido in 1941-1942 at the Stoney Cross II Barrow from the New Forest. It dates to 2150-800 BC.
While the contribution to prehistoric archaeology by Peggy Guido (Nee Piggott) was enormous, she still often remains overlooked. Peggy excavated Bronze Age cemeteries, Hillforts, assisted in the Sutton Hoo excavations (She was portrayed by Lily James in ‘The Dig’) and we still regularly use her book on Saxon glass beads in the office, given the large number from Hamwic.
Peggy really was a Trowelblaser in archaeology and was the former president of the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society. You can read more about her in a great article here https://rb.gy/1e0uz written by Dr Rachel Pope and Dr Mairi Davies
The urn has been laser scanned as part of a collaborative project between Southampton Cultural Services and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton
