Italian binding, mid 16th century, bound at Rome, circa 1545. Black morocco over pasteboard; elaborately gold-tooled. On both covers, a triple frame enclosing an elaborate design of twisting stems with solid tooled leaves, and small single and triple dots; at centre, intersecting triangles with letter-stamped title on upper cover and initials ‘I L N’ (Ioannes Laurentius Nucleus) on lower cover. Textblock edges gilt and gauffered to a knotwork-esque pattern. Spine in eight compartments, the headbands tooled over with alternating single and hatcheted fillets, with gilt centrepieces and cornerpieces.
