The discus-shaped pendant was hung around the neck of Roman boys immediately after birth to ward off harm. The bulla was made of metal or leather, the choice of material depending on the financial possibilities of the parents. The hollow space usually contained small figurines. The bulla was worn until the age of majority, between the ages of 15 and 17.
