This cluster of calcite crystals are also known as “sand crystals” because of the abundant sand grains that are found within these formations. Calcite (calcium carbonate) is a common rock forming mineral that can act as a cement, gluing sand grains together to form solid rock. It is highly unusual for this cementation process to produce outstanding crystal forms like this.
