My topic is in taking the Zen Koan quote, “what is the sound of one hand clapping?” and make it applicable to the world through design. This model is a candle holder and how it works is, you place the candle inside and as it melts, you raise the bottom of the cup holder. This is to rid the idea of the passage of time. What I have gained from exploring this quote is about the importance one being present and not waiting for causal reactions and events. Lighting a candle when meditating and having no sign that time is passing can really make you feel indulged and present in the moment. There is a huge importance in nothingness and I wanted to show that through this project. Not only does it have a philisophical usage but also a practical one. The 3rd quarter of candels arenet usable because you can’t reach and light them often. This takes away that problem and can save you money on buying new candels. Thats not what I find to be the important aspect of this, though there is a practical “need” for it.
