More model informationCarbide lamps, also known as acetylene gas lamps, are lamps which burn chemical acetylene to give light. These lamps were commonly used as lighthouse beacons and as headlights on cars and bicycles.
This particular carbide lamp was made by the Wolf Safety Lamp Company (William Maurice) Limited, Sheffield. This company began operating out of the city in 1911 and still exists today, producing lamps for hazardous environments. Portable carbide lamps such as this one were widely used in mining during the early twentieth century and are still used in some instances.
