A cephalopod ancestor operating a modern phone ancestor. The model was made off of the prompt “Vanhassa vara parempi” (= sometimes older things are better than new inventions). To play off of the prompt, the object and animal in the picture are both older, “prototype” versions of their modern counterparts (a smartphone and a coleoid cephalopod) that have likely gotten smarter, but in doing so, have lost their shells! The coloring was decided to be sepiatone as a reference to cephalopods and their ink, as well as the color schemes of old media.
Created using Blender over the span of 8 days. The piece was made as a school project and utilizes many types of 3D workflow. The phone was modeled as low-poly, UV-mapped manually and the UVs were painted externally in an art program. The cephalopod was primarily sculpted, then vertex painted, and the vertex paint was baked into texture maps. The podium is an addition not originally in the plan, and was painted within Blender using image textures and Texture Paint.
