The Statue of St James the Greaterby Camillo Rusconi (c. 1703–1711) is housed in the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. This approximately 4.5-meter marble statue was part of Pope Clement XI’s commission for twelve colossal apostle figures to fill the niches designed by Francesco Borromini. Rusconi was a central sculptor in this project. St James the Greater, son of Zebedee and one of the Twelve Apostles, is traditionally depicted as a pilgrim, holding a staff and with a scallop shell on his hat (symbol of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela). The work presents a solemn figure, blending Baroque dynamism with classical equilibrium.
