Chalcatzingo Monument 1 - El Rey

Chalcatzingo, Morelos, Mexico Middle Formative Period- The site contains one of the most extensive collections of Middle Formative period (c. 900-500 BC) bas-relief stone sculpture outside of the Olmec Gulf Coast lowlands.

Monument 1- this piece is nicknamed “El Rey” and “El Dador del Agua” - depicts a personage-possibly female- sitting on a box or throne in a quatrefoil-lobed design/cave, with elements thought possibly to depict wind, rain, clouds, and relating to agricultural fertility. This famous and large sculpture is located at the top of a mirador overlook with nearly water elements/seeps and in proximity to numerous other carvings. The piece is cracked and a broken bolder lies in front, obscuring part of the carving.
